The 2004 pilot for Dark Shadows remains unseen by the vast majority of people, but a clip from the show – directed by P.J. Hogan – has surfaced, with Alec Newman as Barnabas Marley Shelton as Victoria Winters.

OK, now THAT’S interesting – and actually looked surprisingly good to me.
From the reports that I’ve read of the ’04 pilot, I wasn’t expecting to see even one minute and nine seconds of it that wasn’t absolutely horrible. Everything, of course, is context. Compared to the Burton fiasco, I’d now probably think this was a work of sublime wonder and genius.
Who knows, maybe Alec Newman really had what it took to be the mysterious cousin from England. Perhaps someday, somehow, we’ll see the full program. At this point, all I ask for is a “Dark Shadows” that doesn’t look like an episode of “Benny Hill”.
I was equally impressed. You know, while the pilot was being filmed I actually interviewed Newman and found his view of things intriguing. I’ll be posting that interview soon.
I’m still hopeful that despite the failure of the film, SOMEONE is going to recognize that there is still potential in DS as a premise and launch a new version. Given their success with Being Human, Syfy would be an ideal outlet for it.
Sidebar: Congrats on being the first to post this little nugget!

It was just a snippet but a promising one especially compared to that-which-shall-not-be-mentioned.
But from everything I’ve heard, the pilot’s a mess. It’s missing a key sequence and things are REALLY over the top – though you wouldn’t get that impression from this clip. As I said previously, let’s hope somebody still recognizes the potential in the concept.

Your take on it seems to be borne out by what I think Jim Pierson said in Return to Collinwood. Dan Curtis quits after being fed up with the demands of WB in making the pilot and they end up with a director who doesn’t get the material even if some of his actors actually do. I read that a lot of the pilot borders on being a Saturday Night Live skit. I’ve seen the above clip before and I think Alec Newman would have made a fine Barnabas and was possibly closer in age what Barnabas perhaps should have been as far as casting goes.
