  1. So this just keeps getting worse and worse.

Barnabas sleeping in the top of an armoire. Barnabas sleeping in a cardboard with styrofoam packing peanuts.WE GET IT, OK? It’s not bad enough that Burton decided to turn Dark Shadows into a comedy, he had to kick it down to a “Porky’s II” level of witless inanity. There are dozens of ways he could have taken the franchise (some actually including grown-up humor) – why in the world did he have to go the lowest-common-denominator route? Did he panic at the last minute when he realized that he wasn’t capable of delivering the dramatic goods? Was it the result of a creative brainstorming meeting with Depp that went horribly awry? Or (as he stated recently) did he just think the original show was so “awful” that it didn’t deserve a thoughtful, respectful reboot?

I saw the Burton DS trailer on the big screen for the first time this weekend at a showing of “The Hunger Games.” I cringed through it from beginning to end. The audience (a full house) didn’t laugh once. That, at least, was a relief.

Sidebar: The studio shills masquerading as fans who post messages on the other DS site are now so ham-fisted and transparent as to be laughable. The webmaster there disallows any anger or real criticism of the trailer – a fact that should have all real Dark Shadows fans deserting his site faster than you can say “Well, that was a regrettable turn of events”.

“Regrettable” doesn’t even BEGIN to cover it.

    • Unfortunately, the lowest-common-denominator makes up the largest proportion of the movie going population, and that’s why we keep getting this sort of drivel.

  2. Yes — Stuart Manning’s site is ridiculous. Very transparent. Commercial. And disingenuous. THIS is the site to come to for DS info — and real fan reactions – good, bad, and otherwise. Thanks Ed.

  3. this movie is great. series made 60s-70s .I saw some episode lately, and I think it’s belong 60s . this time ,people need new something.humor and horror in this trailer seem like good.

  4. Unfortunately, “Dark Shadows” has fallen victim to the current Hollywood trend of doing stupid, dopey remakes of old material and playing them for laughs. I’ve always liked the original series, and (up to now, at least) I a lot of like Tim Burton’s stuff, but judging from the trailers and the PR, this doesn’t even look like a good “Tim Burton Movie” (almost a category unto itself). This one is strictly a date movie for emo teenagers. I wouldn’t waste my time even with a free admission.

  5. Oh, don’t judge the movie by the trailers and descriptions and interviews you’ve seen! There’s fifteen minutes of a good movie in there somewhere! HAHAHA!!!!

(said with tongue planted firmly in cheek)

  6. The trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman makes me wish the director for that movie did Dark Shadows (and Charlize Theron was playing Angelique)…

    • Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus are on my must-see list this summer.

  7. Amen to that, Diab!!! Doesn’t that one look fantastic?!

  8. So Tim Burton says Dark Shadows was awful. Dark Shadows was the best and always will be the best entertainment ever. It was never funny. Bloopers don’t count. Let see you Tim Buirton do a one take show(tape to live) five days a week on a low budget and see how well you do I know more about Dark Shadows than Tim Burton ever will. Tim Burton you are the one that is awful. You don’t deserve to have anything to do with Dark Shadows if that’s the way you feel. Shame on you. I find it sad that if you feel that way. Why then have Kathryn, Lara, David, and Jon in the movie? Tim Burton you are very disrespectful. Let’s hope you don’t make anymore Dark Shadows movies. Leave it to those who understand Dark Shadows because you certainly do not. Have you ever seen House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows? I knew before you made it that you would ruin it. You don’t have it in you so you have to insult the real Dark Shadows. Your version certainly is not. I stuck up for you saying I thought it was cool you still did something to remember the show even though it’s a comedy. But to read that you say the original was awful. What do you think you can even come close to matching it? Let alone do better? C’mon you’re Tim Burton your not Dan Curtis. Get over yourself. If you want a clue on how to do horror look in the mirror now that’s scary!
